What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Elevated LDL Levels?

Male, widower, 70, 167 cm, in normal health. Disciplined life style. No smoking, vegetarian, occasional small drinker. I go for comprehensive cardiac health checkups on an annual basis. So far nothing abnormal has been found except the LDL which is slightly above the limit. BMI 21.5. Family history: Two elder brothers severe cardiac patients.

I go for a morning constitutional that comprises a six kilometer walk. I try a bit of running (for several years now) without discomfort. However, I need to open my mouth and breathe while running otherwise I get short of breath very soon, say after some 300 steps. There is no nose-block.

Why is it so?

With the advancing age, there is a decline in the functional capacity of organs including heart and blood vessels. Inspite of leading a healthy lifestyle , cardiac efficiency of a 70 year old person will not be as good as a 20 year old person. Running being an intense activity requires greater cardiac output and higher oxygen levels to fuel the muscles. That is why shortness of breath occurs when you run.
