What Causes Shortness Of Breath And Pressure In The Chest?

My husband has been suffering shortness of breath and tightness in his chest since February, after a lot of messing about with the gp finally see cardiologist and respiratory consultant, he has been diagnosed with Copd and five years ago following an angiogram needed bypass surgery but because he was very fit at the time nothing was done. Now it would appear too late, they can t even do an angiogram because he can t lie flat. For 6 months now he has got worse and worse but seems like nothing is going to be done as they do not want to do angiogram under general anaesthetic and respiratory say he will not manage surgery. Twelve months ago my husband did 25 miles every weekend, in January he was still doing 10 miles each day, he now can t walk to the car. What would you do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

He is known case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Your doctor is right. He will not able to handle any general anesthesia induced surgery. Right sided heart failure secondary to COPD also has to be ruled out. For that echocardiography can be done. For copd ipratropium bromide inhalation can be done. Cardiologist will be best to consult for further management.

Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.
