General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Shortness of breath during exercise is a common symptom. During heavy exercise the heart rate will also increase. Heart rate during exercise depends on age and intensity of exercise. Shortness of breath can also be a symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes breathing difficulty, cough, mucus production, feeling of chest tightness, fatigue.
But if there is too much difficulty in breathing along with asthma/wheeze or or chest tightness is an alarming symptom. Also, shortness of breath could be due to cardiac problems. It is always better to start with warm up exercises and end with cool down exercises. You can see a pulmonologist to evaluate lung function and determine the root cause of the shortness of breath and whether to continue doing exercise or need to take a break.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Shortness of breath while exercising is seen in conditions like acute myocardial ischemia, heart failure, cardiac tamponade, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pulmonary infection in the form of bronchitis or pneumonia, and upper airway obstruction by aspiration or anaphylaxis.
You need to have the following tests to come to a diagnosis and to know the severity of disease: 1) ECG 2)2D echocardiography 3) Chest X-ray 4) Thorough clinical examination in person 5) Kidney function tests Please do consult a cardiologist for further evaluation and initiating appropriate treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
