What Causes Shortness Of Breath While Walking Up The Hill?

During our morning walks my wife gets short of breath on the hills, and her legs get heavy. She doesnt seem to improve with routine walking, and sometimes its worse than others. she is 5-4 and 142 lbs, and we have been walking for 45 minutes every day for many years

Your wife is having breathlessness on heavy exertion (uphill walking). This is commonly seen with lung diseases like bronchitis and heart diseases like angina and heart failure.
So better to rule out these diseases first.
So get done
1. Ecg and 2d echo to rule out heart diseases.
2. Chest x ray and PFT (pulmonary function test) to rule out lung pathology.
She may need treatment on the basis of these reports.
Don't worry, she will be alright with treatment.
Better to first diagnose herself and then start appropriate treatment.
