What Causes Shortness Of Breath With Pain Near Ribcage?

hello, i m an 18 year old girl. Recently, i ve had trouble taking in deep breaths along with constant short breaths throughout the day. Sometimes it hurts near the rib cage although thats to the right. I used to get these bursts of pain while taking a breath in, this has increased relatively. I also get extremely light headed when i move from positions, say i m lying down and i get up or i turn while lying down. At times, it tampers with my vision. As an infant i was diagnosed with something called mitral valve prolapse and i did have a bad case of wheezing as a child. My wheezing is minimal now. I also bruise easily. Another thing is, I smoke. Not alot, but i just though it may help knowing. i m sorry for all this information. I feel pretty weak, though i cant get myself checked.

Thanks for your question on HCM.
In your case, we need to rule out cardiac and pulmonary causes both because you had mitral valve prolapse (MVP) , so cardiac cause can be there and you had wheezing with active smoking, so pulmonary cause can be there.
So get done
1. ECG and 2d echo to rule out cardiac cause.
2. Chest x ray and PFT (pulmonary function test) to rule out pulmonary causes.
Better to quit smoking as soon as possible.
If all the above mentioned investigation s are normal than no need to worry much. Anxiety can cause symptoms , you are having.
So avoid stress and tension. Be relax and calm. And quit smoking because it is not a good habit.
