What Causes Shortness Of Breath?

Hi I am 58 realtivley decent shape I have started to have shortness of breath after doing something strenuous. like carrying the grandchild up 3 flights of stairs. Yesterday I was in the woods wading rivers flyfishing and I noticed I had to stop and catch my breath after some laborious parts my heart was beating like I had been running as well. . I feel like there is some sort of congestion in my lungs am hacking some like there is something I cant cough up.

It would be best to rule out heart or lung disease as a cause of your symptoms.

You would need to be assessed by your doctor and investigations would likely be needed as well.
Investigations may include chest x ray and an ECG at least. Blood tests to rule out anemia may also be required as well.
