What Causes Single Long Thick Hair Growth On Buttock In A Child?

20 month old daughter - noticed long strands of dark hair (1 inch in length) that appeared virtually overnight on the outer part of both sides of her buttocks. One single long black hair growing out of her lower back. What could possibly be the cause? Her pediatrician has no clue.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If it is just a single strand of hair, it is usually harmless. If the child have a tuft of hair right in the middle of lower back (spine area) that suggest underlying spinal cord deformity. The typical presentation of tuft of hair over spinal deformity is usually observed in infancy. The condition is diagnosed with ease using CT, MRI, X-ray of the lower back in addition to routine physical examination.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
