What Causes Skin Pain On The Abdomen And Under The Ribs?

I have had pain in the skin in my abdomen and stomach area for about a year. It is on the left side now and feels like shingles. I have not had a rash at all, but the pain is still there. It started on the right side just under my ribs and has moved around. It hurts to touch the skin in the area. I have had scans, and nothing has shown up. I have back problems and think that it might be nerve pain from my back but am not sure. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Very likely a skin pain without any lesions or trauma is due to the nerve that feeds the skin in that area. Nerve related pain is quite resistant to the usual pain killers and also all the examinations come out normal, as it has also happened in your case.

I would advise you to consider taking gabapentin for the pain as gabapentin is a medication quite effective with nerve-related pain. This is a prescription drug and you will have to get a prescription from your doctor to access it.

I hope this is helpful and answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further assistance is needed.
