What Causes Sleeping With Open Eye And Gibberish Talking?

I was having a full conversation with my boyfriend while he was sleeping. He was looking right at me. Talking jibberish. I slapped him to wake him up but it didn't work right away. Once he woke up he said he knew what was happening but for some reason couldn't get out what he wanted to say. Why?
