What Causes Sleeplessness After Temazepam Withdrawal?

My mother has been taking 15 mg dose of Temazapan for the past 9 years. She is 82 years old and lives alone. The past year or so she has been experiencing mental confusion. MRI indicates normal aging brain. I want to get her off this medication because I believe it is constributing to her mental state. For the last month I have been giving her 10 mg of melatonin in addition to the Temazapan. When I try removing the Temazapan from her evening pills she can t sleep! Beyond frustrated! What else can I try?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is very true that this is a long time to be on this medication and it is a also true that it would be best if it were discontinued if possible.

Since she has been on it for years, it has to be weaned off slowly to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

In general, weaning in done in consultation with a doctor so you may want to consult her doctor.
In general, the dose has to be decreased slowly over a prolonged period and a long acting substitute given in some cases.

I hope this helps
