What Causes Sleeplessness While On Raloxifene And Simvastatin?

I am a 80 year old gal and have been taking raloxifene 60 mg tabs for probably two years. I was on Evista before and my insurance (Aetna) changed my prescription to raloxidene. I have been taking this along with my simvastatin 20mg in the evening before I go to bed. Recently I have not been able to go to sleep and may lay away for as long as three hours not even coming close to falling asleep. Recently the pill changed it s appearance which I know depends on the mfg. but this one is white and oval shape. In all my reading of side effects there is nothing said about this problem but do you think the combination of the two pills or just my taking it at bed time is causing this not being able to go to sleep. Also last January I had a knee replacement and due to stomach upset from pain meds I lost ten pounds. I now weigh ll7 and unable to gain this weight back. I feel this not being able to get my sleep may be the reason. What do you think? Jeannine Kinsey - Carey Ohio

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

In my opinion, there is no reason to be worried and usually, this is just temporary and self-limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case.

Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such as sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such as seizures and psychiatric disorders such as depression.

If emotional causes are ruled out then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.

In my opinion, polysomnography ( sleep study ), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
