What Causes Slight Dizzy Spells?

Hi,
I've been having slight dizzy spells almost every time I stand up. My peripheral vision sort of dims or darkens and then comes right back. The spell usually lasts only for about 3 seconds. It's started only recently, about a week ago, maybe less. Since last night though, I've had a bit of a heaviness in the back of my head. I 'm not quite sure how to describe this. It's not even a heaviness, just a sort or queer sensation. Like an impending dizzy spell that never comes. I felt a little lethargic yesterday as well as today.

Now a little background. I'm a 27 year old male who is about 6'2" and weighed around a 100 kilo's the last time I checked, which was about a month ago. I have always been overweight. I have however recently started to lose weight. I've lost a substantial amount in the last month, so much so that I wouldn't describe the 100 kilo weight above as accurate any more. I am staying away from home for a short course, and have significantly cut down my food intake. I don't keep food in my room, so I end up eating only once a day. I walk everywhere I go, and when I'm walking, I feel totally fine. I don't feel any of the aforementioned symptoms. My walks are generally at around 6ish in the evening for at least an hour, usually two. Leisurely, not very strenuous. About 4 times a week I walk to or from class about 15 to 20 mins in equatorial noonday heat. I work out a bit every 2 days or so with light weights. I am also a gout patient, and rely on my meds to maintain some semblance of a balanced diet. However as the meds aren't available here, I have been almost totally vegetarian for the past month, barring beef burgers which I have had twice. Due to the severe lack of protein, I have started using a whey protein supplement, which apparently contains about 7 gms of protein per tablespoon. I use about 2 to 3 tablespoons per day. I also normally have a boiled egg or two with dinner which is my only meal in the day.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to:
1. Any pathology in the vestibular apparatus in inner ear (it is associated with maintenance of body posture & balance)
2. Any fluctuation in blood pressure levels (such as Postural Hypotension)
3. Decrease in blood sugar levels (Hypoglycemia)
4. Deficiency of certain nutrients like Iron, Vitamin B 12, Calcium, etc. which interferes with blood formation & nerve conduction.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained with Vestibular sedatives.
In addition, you can take nervigenic agents (like Vit B6, B12, Folic acid) & Pantoperazole (to be taken 30 minutes before meals).
Investigations like complete blood count, estimation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels and vestibular function tests will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Meanwhile, maintain adequate hydration, take a healthy balanced diet & avoid sudden head movements.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
