What Causes Slightly Elevated Testosterone And Low Progesterone?

I had blood work done a few months ago that showed that my testosterone is slightly elevated, my estrogen is normal and my progesterone is low. I have slight hair growth under the belly button, on the chin and in sideburn areas, and around the nipples. My periods are normal in timing--each cycle is 30-33 days. However, they are heavy to start and last 7 days. I had a pelvic MRI done 2 years ago at age 19 that showed follicular cysts on the ovaries. Is it likely I have PCOS?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Even though testosterone is a male sex hormone, females secret it normally in some amount. However, when the testosterone level reaches high, females may experience symptoms like increased hair growth where hair are normally not found in females. Your symptoms coincide with high testosterone levels. It is a sign of PCOS.

Low progesterone level indicates that probably egg has not released from the ovary. This is also a sign of PCOS.

These test results combined with the MRI that suggests presence of follicular cysts in the ovaries indicate that you have PCOS. Your gynecologist wil prescribe you hormone replacement therapy for the shrinkage of cysts, normal hormonal balance along with normal menstrual cycles and ovulation while preventing further development of cysts.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
