What Causes Slurred Speech And Loss Of Body Balance While On Dilantin?
my mother takes dilantin and she has the side effect of slurred speech, loss of balance and coordination. How serious is this? She is also experiencing mood swings as well, but she is menopausal. She is taking Dilantin because she had a cancerous tumor the size of a tennis ball removed from between the lining or her brain and the brain itself in 1988.

Loss of balance and cordination are side effect of Dilantin. it may be possible that her Dilantin level in body is high leading to these symptom. So check the Serum Phenitoin level , if high then ask your doctor to reduce the dose or change the drug. She need to be evaluated by psychiatrist for her mood swing .
