What Causes Small Pimple Like Growth On Nipple?

My boyfriend and I recently found a small pimple-like growth on his right nipple. He has no pain, swelling, or tenderness. I was considering trying a warm compress to see if it would loosen and possibly be a clogged duct or even an ingrown hair. Should we try that or head to the MD's office?
