Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am at ease communicatng in one on one situations but find it difficult to contribute in a group situation. What could I be suffering from that makes me so anxious in team situations? I aslo have a special fear and resentment for people in authority. Is there a known phobia related to this and how can I end it?
The symptoms like difficulty in communicating in group or team situation, fear of authorities are most likely due to social anxiety only. These symptoms cause significant distress. Social phobia is related to it, and development of symptoms start occurring during development. If the symptoms cause severe distress then I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist for opinion. Social anxiety is treated with psychological methods and medicines. Psychological methods include Behaviour Therapy along with relaxation exercises like PMR (progressive muscle relaxation exercises), Breathing Exercises etc. Medicines like Propranolol can prove useful in anxiety provoking situations like group discussion or team works. SSRIs like Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline etc are used for treatment in more severe cases.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
