Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had my hawley retainer for a couple weeks. My retainer (Most noticeably the bottom retainer) feels Constantly soft and sticky, almost like it has started to melt. When i first brought it home it felt like hard plastic. I normally clean it by brushing it with cold water and tooth paste whenever I brush my teeth. I also soak it in warm water with denture cleaner every few days (polident) for a few minutes. It s also much easier to remove from my mouth than when I first got it. Sometimes I brush my teeth in the shower and set my retainer to the side still in the shower before I get to cleaning it and putting it back in my mouth. Is this sticky feeling normal or should I pay a visit to my orthodontist before my next appointment?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain softening of the material used to form the base of the retainer that is made of denture base resin is seen in cases when Gluteraldehyde or phenol based disinfectants are used to clean the retainer which can lead to softening and pitting of the denture resin.. You should consult your Orthodontist and get the retainer evaluated and if required get the relining or rebasing done and if required get a new retainer fabricated and you should use the denture cleaner as advised by your orthodontist for the specified time it should be kept immersed in the denture cleaner and you should do it accordingly..
Hope this information helps..
