What Causes Sore Nipples Post Abortion?

Hi, I am 30-year-old female who just had an abortion about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have a 1 year old and couldn t afford another. Toughest decision of my life. But your not here to judge, only to help. So my question is, when I was pregnant with my first , my milk or colostrum didn t come in until the very end when she was just born. With this pregnancy, which I terminated at 7 weeks along, was totally different. I vomitted literally 24 seven to the point I was hospitalized constantly. Had I gone through with having this baby I m not sure how healthy of a pregnancy it would ve been. But getting back to my question. 2 1/2 weeks after a surgical abortion was done to me last night my husband and I were having relations, and we noticed leaking from my nipples. They also hurt and still hurt SO badly. Not the kind of hurt you feel when your breasts are sore from being pregnant, but rather my nipples are sore as if a BAby has been drinking from them for the first time. So besides leaking constantly milk from my boobs and the pain I m in, it s very much disturbing and sad. My decision was the hardest decision I ever had to make and I m still unsure if I made the right one, so having this happen is terrible all it is is a constant reminder of the baby I don t have that I should have had. Please tell me why this is happening and how long it will last. It makes it so much harder to try and get over this terrible thing I had to do when your body is trying to feed a baby that isn t there. It s so very sad for me. And painful. And leaking everywhere. I m so very sorry for writing you a novel, but I really would like your opinion. Is this normal? And when will it typically stop? Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Brianne *

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is due to hormonal imbalance. It will disappear with in 3 to 4 week as body will get adapted. But, you should go for USG to confirm that abortion is complete and there is no any trace of remaining gestational sac.

Do hormonal profile: E2, P, FHS, LH, Thyroid, HCG

Advice for you:

1. Life style changes
- 30 min regular walk
- Wear supportive pad bra
- Use of ice pack
- Relaxation exercise: breathing technique
- Low fat diet
- High fiber intake
- Decreased salt intake
- Multivitamin intake

2. Gentle massage with prime rose oil
3. Acupuncture therapy

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dholariya Sagar Jayantilal
