What Causes Sore Redness In Big Toe Followed By Numbness After Injury?

I am experiencing numbness in my left large toe for about two weeks now. This past weekend I wore a flip flop which had cut into my toe and I didn t realize it. Now my large toe and the toe next to it are red and sore. I have soaked my foot and put ointment on but my toes are very red and itchy. I can walk on my foot but between my toes are uncomfortable.

Hello,

Since you had an injury and now are experiencing numbness, soreness and pain associated with itching and redness. You are suggested to give rest to your feet. Take care of your hygiene, since you have inflamed toe it can get infected. Do not touch, scratch or pick. You can apply cold pack to ease discomfort. You can apply ointment hydrocortisone or Soframycin ointment in the area affected. Take tablet Combiflam, one SOS to reduce inflammation, soreness and discomfort.

To prevent any infection, take a course of Augmentin. Since you are having numbness, it can be due to nerve compression, poor circulation of blood into the foot due to swelling or injury, fracture, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get X-ray and MRI/CT done to detect any fracture or major nerve injury. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
