What Causes Sore Spot On Upper Thigh That Hurts Upon Pressure?

I have a sore upper outer thigh that hurts when I press on the bone about four inches below the hip. It hurts in this area only when I sit or stand or put hand pressure on my leg. There is no redness or swelling but I noticed some newly formed angry looking varicose veins on my outer knee and just below the area that's sore. This pain developed all of a sudden this evening but isn't spreading beyond the original tender area. Any ideas what may be causing this?
