What Causes Sore Throat Along With Fever And Headache?

I am 70 year old female who has experienced sore throat, fever, congestion for more than a month. I have seen PC Doc once a week for last 5 weeks. I have taken 2 series of Z-pac antibiotics, and seem to get better, but then fever returns ( only low-grade now), tight headache, body aches, low energy and just a feeling of being unwell. Sleep is difficult due to terrible night-time coughing and throat clearing. Talking also triggers cough. I have tried prescription cough syrup w/codeine and Benzotate soft pills, but they haven t really helped. I m wondering about side effects of Lisinipril taken for hypertension...recently doubled dose. I was switched from Triamterene HCTZ about a year ago due to change in kidney function results of regular bloodwork. I have recently read that another med I ve taken for many years (Omprazole) could be the cause of kidney function changes. The reason for Omprazole was to counter-act stomach irritation from use of Advil to treat Arthritis and chronic neck pain. I m trying to switch from Advil to Tylenol, but it doesn t do much for my pain. Could any of this be connected to my current symptoms. Flu tests were all negative. My Doc did not see signs of Pneumonia, but said she could hear wheezing in chest. I have used Ventolin inhaler , as well as, Flovent inhaler. I m so frustrated that I can t feel better and nothing seems to help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to chronic tonsillitis.

Chronic tonsillitis is a bacterial infection which does not respond to the use of antibiotics.

Some examinations are needed to confirm the diagnosis.

I recommend a complete blood cell count and a throat swab.

Meanwhile, you can use anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
