What Causes Sore Throat And Swollen Red Tongue?

Hey, I have had a sore throat for almost 2 weeks. I had a fever at first but as of right now it s just my throat hurts. Salt water gargling doesn t seem to be helping at all along with the other medicine I ve been taking (mucinex, aleve, alkaselzer (for mucus)). Today I used a flashlight to look at my throat and my tonsils, uvula, and underneath my tongue are all red and swollen. It is extremely painful to swallow and I don t taste food as well. I have been coughing up quite a bit of mucus and it feels like there is stuff constantly in my throat (like a choking feeling). I am going to the doctor tomorrow but I am wondering what to expect to hear. I am starting to worry that it may be tonsillitis because I don t seem to be contagious. People have been drinking and eating after me (they re not the brightest...) and no one has gotten sick. Thanks, Darby

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms it seems you are suffering from Viral Pharyngitis, Tonsilllitis along with secondry bacterial infection and with redness of tongue is also due to inflammation caused by infection and is known as Glossitis..

Nothing to worry as it will be resolved by correct line of treatment..
You should take antibiotics like Augmentin or Azithromycin for 5 days.
Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.
Take mucolytic medicines like Ambroxol.
If there is congestion, decongestant like Pseudoephadrine [sudafed]
You will have to continue salt water gargles atlest 3 to 4 times a day.
Do steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room..
Take sufficient rest.
For sore tongue you can gargle with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.
Avoid hot and spicy foods.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
