What Causes Sore Throat, Blocked Ears, And Low Platelet Levels?

My daughter has had a sore throat with aches and pains, blocked ears, headache and low platelets (92,000). Her husband had the flu badly with aches and pains so it seems she may have caught it. But she is a pretty strong individual and after one week she still had some aches and pains with a slight sore throat. She has been working extra hard these days massaging tennis while she was not well so she is wondering why should her platelets be low?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Since there is a history of flu in family all her symptoms of sore throat, aches, blocked ears are seemingly due to viral infection. The commonest cause of low platelet count is viral infection but other causes like dengue or bone marrow suppression should also be seen for. I would suggest her the following:
* First of all is bed rest as movements will cause more symptoms and late healing.
* Anti-inflammatory medicines with painkiller properties like Ibuprofen in proper doses and duration
* Antibiotic
* Oral and nasal decongestant
* Repeat the CBC for platelet count and consult hematologist for further investigations and treatment if no improvement is seen

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
