What Causes Sore Throat, Swollen Tongue And Canker Sore On Lips?

Hi, my daughter was just at the doctor as was told she has pharyngitis. her strep test came back negative. They gave her a magic mountwash prescription to pick up at the store. Symptons that started Monday were: sore throat (which has slowly gotten worse over time). her tongue is a bit swollen as well as her throat. she has white spots on her tonsils and she has a huge number of canker sores on the back of her bottom lip - all different sizes but the inside of her lip is covered with them. She hasn t eaten anything unusual. She has been swimming in the Willamette River with friends, but that is the only thing I can think of out of the norm. no current boyfriend. any ideas? thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Thank You for contacting HCM.

She must be suffering from Acute Tonsillitis. White spots over the tonsils could represent pus. You did not mention her age. Other possibility is that she might be bitten by an insect during swimming or got infection from there. Following home remedy will help to improve the symptoms:
> Take hot water in a cup, add 1 table spoon salt in it, perform gargles ( mouth wash) with it thrice a day for atleast 2-3 days. It will give soothing effect and improve the symptoms.

If symptoms does not improve in 2-3 days or get worsen then she needs to start 7 days antibiotic course.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow
up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.
Wishing her good health.
