What Causes Sores On Tongue While On Prednisone And Amoxicillin?

I have a case of where I went to the doctor, for a sore throat; he provided me azithromycin. I took one pill, fell asleep for about and hour, woke up and I had mouth sores. I then called my doctor and he told me to continue taking the azithromycin. I didn't trust him, so I went and saw a different doctor and she prescribed me prednisone for my swollen face and mouth. She also gave me amoxicillin to help fight whatever is going on with my throat. I have been taking the prednisone and amoxicillin for about 5 days and my throat is getting better but my mouth is not. I don't know what to about my mouth, I have sores on my tongue, under my tongue, the inside/ outside of my lips, inside of my cheeks. I am afraid that I'm having a allergic reaction to the amoxicillin, without even knowing. Maybe I'm just paranoid...Help please?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sores on tongue while on Prednisone and Amoxicillin . The symptoms you mention is clearly indicating condition known as 'COLD SORES ' or due to side effects of medicine . They are harmless and will go away In 7 - 10 days by its own . The fever you mention in query is because of cold sores . Sometimes they do not go away by their own and need medical attention . the are caused by herpes simplex virus . There are many factor which act as trigger factor for infection , taking antibiotics is one of them. I would suggest you to :-

- Avoid hot and spicy food .
- Apply orabase gel before every meal to reduce the pain and burning sensation.
- Take probiotics food like yogurt .
If condition doesn't subside in a week then consult oral pathologist . Doctor may prescribe anti viral drug (Acyclovir or Valacyclovir ) , steroid ointment or vitamin B12 supplement.
