What Causes Spitting Up Of Blood?

I have been spitting up blood for a couple of weeks. It started with a very small amount and then increased for 3-4 days and now is back to a very small amount. For some reason, the bleeding is a bit more at night than during the day. I am 57 years old and my first trip to the allergy doctor was when I was 2 weeks old. I have a life long history of severe allergies and have had prior episodes of angio edema of eye, face, and mouth on several occasions. I went to the emergency room two weeks ago when the bleeding started and was told I have very inflamed nasal passages. Also, I have had multi nodular goiters since 1983. When I was first diagnosed I was told that I have hot and cold spots so a fna biopsy was done. They have increased in size gradually and decreased in size from fna biopsies through the years, but presently, they are visible and considered large. They were large when I was first diagnosed. I have had some problems swallowing, of all things, bread and meat after they got larger. My last US of my thyroid was 1 year ago and I was told they were not changed much at that time. I am on .125 synthroid and have had 3-4 fnas since diagnosis. I am told that the goiters are colloid goiters. Also, fluid has been aspirated from them when fna biopsies were done. Two weeks ago I had a TSH test done and the results show to be 0.65. Also, I have an eye disease called Superior Limbic Kerataconjuntivitis (SLK) which is believed to to have some correlation to thyroid isease. I was diagnosed with SLK in 2004.

Tuesday of this week I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my throat and soreness especially when I swallow and the pain and swelling was bad for 2-3 days. It seems to be subsiding now. When I look at my neck, the goiters seem to have decreased in size in the last week.

Would it be possible that maybe one of the nodules has ruptured and the spitting up blood (I am not coughing up blood) could be due to these goiters? Most of the time now I only have blood tinged mucus. I went to the emergency room twice since this has been going on and my vitals seemed fine and my lungs were clear.

Any information provided would be greatly appreciated

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello, thanks for your query, spotting of blood in small amounts could be due due to gum diseases, nasal bleeding coming into throat, bleeding veins from esophagial varices , it could be due to constant trauma to ulcer of palate , tongue, palate or due to bleeding disorders.as such colloid goiter can not cause any bleeding from throat. kindly visit ant ent and gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.all the best. take care.
