What Causes Spondylitis ?

Hi,i've recently been told that i've got spondylitis in the base of my neck where it joins the shoulders, and was put on morphine because i'm already on tramadol for osteo-arthritus, but wasn't really given much else in the way of information on this condition can you please explain this to me.
