What Causes Spotting And Cramping Before Periods?

Hi, I can't tell if i started my period early or if I am just spotting? I have mild cramps. I am on the birth control pill and also always use a condom. I am nervous I am pregnant, but don't see how it is possible. How can I for sure know if its an early period or spotting?
