What Causes Spotting And Discharges Instead Of A Period?

My husband and I are trying to conceive. I was suppose to start my period on Tuesday but instead I began having having light brown and pink spotting/discharge on Tuesday (not a lot)! I took a pregnancy test yesterday and it was negative! Could I be pregnant?
