What Causes Spotting Despite Having Regular Periods?

I am 27 and not on any hormonal birth control. I m not due to start my period for another 4 days but yesterday when using the bathroom there was bright orange/red and very slippery blood on the toilet paper. It lasted all day, enough for a tampon, but by night it was gone. My periods are always like clockwork every 30 days and lasting 3 days; so I m concerned of a possible infection or any other health concerns this could signify. I m not actively trying to conceive but plan to be in the next year and want to ensure I keep my uterus healthy. Lol.
