What Causes Spotting, Periods And Again Spotting?

My girlfriend and I have been trying for a baby, Her period didn't come at all, she took a few tests which all came back Negative, now today she was spotting brown blood, that went to normal period color and now its back to brown. Do you have any idea whats going on? or do you think she is Pregnant?
