What Causes Squishy Lump On Sides Of Ankle?

Hi, my mother has a lump on the side of her ankle. Its not hard, its actually quite squishy, and she says it hurts her ankle and her foot. She's had it for about a year and has no clue how she got it. If anyone has any suggestions on what it might be I would greatly appreciate it, thank you.
