What Causes Stabbing Pain In Feet?

my husband has type2 diabetes and has been suffering with foot pain for years, recently enough to render him unable to work(he is on a ladder for the better part of his day) he has orthodicts which help with joint pain but can't figure out the stabbing pain. any ideas?
