What Causes Stabbing Pain In The Chest?

I have had strange chest pains off and on over the course of 15 years or so, they've come and gone less and less as I got older, (I'm now 28.) but every now and then in the same spot that I would get the pains I get this slight kicking feeling on the inside of my chest, like when I'm pregnant and the baby is kicking me. Don't know if this makes any sense but I'm really curious as to what's going on. By the way, the original chest pains were never diagnosed as anything so I don't know what they were to begin with. Can you help?
