What Causes Stabbing Pain In Thighs?

In both thighs, the left more than the right, I have very sharp stabbing pains as if aknife had gone in and twisted in the middle of the night.. The attack lasts several minutes and leaves my thigh as if sandpapers had gone over it leaving it very sore
