Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 52 year old female. For the past 4-5 days, I have been having pain under my right breast. It turns into a stabbing pain when I take a deep breath. I was wondering if it s anything to be super concerned about or if I should wait to see if it gets better on its own. Thank you.
Chest pain that worsens on taking a deep breath can be due to different possible causes such as : (1) pleuritis - this refers to inflammation of the pleura which is a lining that is found around the lungs
(2)pericarditis- this is a lining that is found around the heart
(3)severe costochondritis- this would normally cause central discomfort however
Many cases of pleuritis or pericarditis are due to viral infections and complications may not occur but it would be best to see your doctor for an assessment.
This would allow a definite diagnosis to be made. This assessment should involve a thorough history and chest examination including listening to heart sounds. Investigations may or may not be needed depending on these findings.
I hope this helps
