What Causes Stabbing Pains Behind The Sternum?

woken up by stabbing pains behind sternum at same time same pains felt on inner aspect of left elbow only lasted a few seconds but very painful. have had the pain in my chest briefly over the following couple of days but it hasn't occurred in my elbow. I'm otherwise fit and healthy and active. Wonder what this could be.
