What Causes Sticky Hair Due To Fluid Discharge From The Scalp?

Hi there. I have woken up this morning with my hair all sticky in one spot... my scalp is oozing clear fluid! It is sensitive to touch... I am on holidays therefore I am unsure if it is sunburn?? Also I hit my head off a cabinet yesterday which caused a great deal of pain. What do you think is causing this and how do I treat it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Patient,

I think the fluid is inflammation fluid, that the skin produces when happens an accident, such as hitting, cutting or burning the skin. (in your case the skin of the head).

I think you should wash gently your head with lukewarm water and soap. Make sure to rinse it well with warm water. After that, check it with somebody (since you are on holidays), or with your local doctors, to see if there is a deep cut and if there is blood.

But a bandage, or anything else to protect the hurted area. Be sterile.

Open it and wash it with water every day. Avoid sun.

You may apply some antibiotic cream on it.

Use paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen to alleviate the pain.

Best Regards,
Dr. Eni
