What Causes Stiff And Swollen Neck, Followed By A Painful And Swollen Shoulder?

I am a 52 yr old man. Last Tuesday I woke up with a severe stiff swollen neck on the right side. A week later my neck is better, and now my shoulder on the right side is killing me. Swollen and hurts so bad I m unable too sleep. What do you think is going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Very likely this is due to a muscle pain and when muscles are in spasm they seem swollen and are tender. Muscular pain may migrate as well and seem to move from one place to another especially from neck to shoulder and back because these muscle groups are connected to one another.

To help with it you will need some ibuprofen and you may also add some paracetamol, local compresses might help as well. If no improvement, a visit with a physiotherapist might help as he can give you exercises to relax the muscle in spasm and help relieve pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
