What Causes Stiff Neck With Cracking Sound Upon Rotating?

I have had a sore neck for a couple of months now. I have noticed that when I roll my head side to side and back I hear a squishy sounds, sometimes a bit like a cracking. I haven t been to the physio yet as I thought it was just muscle strain but I am a bit concerned about the sounds although I don t think they are new for me. Hi - I think I will go to my doctor but thanks.

Hi,

Cracking sounds in neck on movement soreness in neck for few months is a cause of concerns as most of the disease creep in slowly till you get the really painful condition limiting the work.

Hence I would advise you the following:
- First of all, get an opinion of your Doctor, clinical evaluation, examination
- MRI of cervical spine to see for the cause of soreness and to see for the bones and their joints
- Inter-vertebral joints arthritis can be the cause of pain in neck as well as that typical sound one gets on movement
- The treatment will be as per the exact findings and not as per what one thinks
- Specific cause has to be found out
- Supportive test of blood are needed
- Avoid sudden jerks to the neck

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
