What Causes Stiffness In The Neck?

I have a very stiff neck and a few lumps on the left side of my neck, I've had a couple of the lumps for a long time. Over the last couple of weeks I feel achy, tired and wake up sweating. I'm thinking of going to see my doctor on Monday, but don't want to waste his time if it's nothing!
