What Causes Stinging And Swelling In Toe?

Why has my hallux (second toe) been stinging/slightly swollen?
I want to know if anybody knows why this is happening, it's been going on for about 3-4 weeks now. I don't recall injuring it at all. One day it just started stinging, and now it's slightly swollen. I want to know why, and what I can/should do about it.

(It's located on the lower tip of the toe, the part that presses on the floor when I walk, so it stings when I put pressure onto it)
