What Causes Stinging Pain In Upper Right Side Radiating Towards Shoulder?
I am having stinging pain in the upper right side, under my ribs. It is radiating to my shoulder, but is very dull stinging. I have had this off on for several months, but today it got worse after eating lunch. I just ate soup for supper and I could feel it going down, with a burning sensation. Just uncomfortable. No nausea, but have had terrible gas for the past few days, until yesterday. My esophagus also feels like it is irritated and connected to the stinging pain. Should I go ahead and go to an ER, since it is just mild at this time? It s about a 5 on a scale of 1-10. Just wondering if it could be gall stones.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi,
Cholecystitis or gall stones can give such symptoms. If taking Proton pump inhibitors like Esomeprazole (Nexium) is helping then no need to go to ER. In such case it can be gastritis. If no improving and there is persisting or worsening of pain then go to ER.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nishad B. N., General & Family Physician
