What Causes Stinging Sensation On Leg After An Ankle Injury?

Several days ago my daughter rolled her ankle in gym. Didn't complain about until yesterday. Today is worse even though she had a "boot" to wear from a previous injury. Another major complaint is when she just taps the outside of the ankle she gets a stinging sensation all the up her leg. What could this be?
