What Causes Stomach Cramps Before A Menstrual Period?

Tonight I had intense cramps, like I would when I have my menstrual cycle except I am not supposed to have that until next Thursday. I took a test but it was negative. Can I be pregnant with these cramps early before my period. I have never had this happen soo early before my period before.
