What Causes Stomach Discomfort, Diarrhea And Vomiting?

Last night, I was completely fine until about 10:30 when I started getting stomach discomfort. Shortly after the diarrhea started (like water) multiple times overnight. I threw up about 5 times and continued to have water like diarrhea until close to 8 am this morning. Plus, I had a dull ache in my stomach all night and into the morning that basically went away after I threw up the last time. This is the worst I have felt in a long time. I feel much better now, but haven t eaten anything all day either.

Hi there,

It is likely that you have suffered some food poisoning. What you need to focus on right now is your hydration, because dehydration is much more dangerous than the lack of food. If you are not nauseous any more, start with plain water. If you feel better, then drink fluids like rehydration salts or even Gatorade to replace your electrolyte losses.

Don't worry about the food intake, our bodies have enough storage to go for a few days without food. When you do feel up to eating, then start with plain, easily digestible foods like crackers or bread or porridge. Progress on to fruits and vegetables, leaving proteins for the last, because they are the hardest to digest.

Medication wise, if you are still unwell I would start with anti-vomiting medication like metoclopramide or domperidone. Once you feel less nauseous, take something to absorb whatever toxins or viruses that are causing the problem, like activated charcoal or Smecta. I usually do not recommend anti-diarrhoeals unless you are having difficulty keeping your fluids up, or purely for convenience's sake if you have an important event, because you will recover quicker once you get rid of the offending problem.

Get help if:
1. You continue vomiting and can't keep water down.
2. You develop persistent abdominal pain.
3. You get a high fever.
4. The diarrhoea is profuse and you are passing almost clear fluid, or if it doesn't improve after 3 days or so.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
