Hi, my name is Christopher Murphy and I am writing on behalf of my girlfriend Poppy McInnes, who is 19 years old.
Last year at the end of April she had been bleeding vaginally for a few weeks, this did not coincide with her cycle so she went to the doctors. The doctor suggested that she had an ectopic pregnancy and that she should go to hospital immediately. At the hospital she had a pregnancy test, a urine test and blood tests all came back negative with no problems found. She also had an ultrasound scan, external and internal, both with negative results again. The only thing that they suggested was lumps on her ovaries that if got bigger would cause problems but not to worry about at that time. She was discharged that day, but the pain became worse that night and her mum took her straight back in. She spent 3 days on the gynaecology ward but yet again nothing was found and she was discharged. A few weeks passed and she began to bleed irregularly from her vagina and also her back passage. A few weeks later she collapsed at work with pain in her stomach in her left hand side. She was finally diagnosed with IBS and given buscopan. She was given an appointment for a sigmoidoscopy and an endoscopy but yet again she was given the all clear even though we explained that pain for 3 months must mean something but to no avail.
She recently moved to uni in the middle of January and the bleeding from her vagina began again midcycle. The bleeding carried on for 2 weeks with constant stomach pains in her left side. She collapsed around two weeks ago with a very bad stomach pain and also anal bleeding and was admitted to hospital. The doctor said it was her ovaries and was told she was going to be given an ultrasound and also needed to give a blood test to test for clotting. She visited her gp where she did another urine test for pregnancy, which again came back negative. Yesterday she went into a&e with severe stomach pain in her lower left hand side. Again you were discharged with the doctor saying it was probably her ovaries that were causing her symptoms. He told her he would write to her gp who would need to write to another hospital who would then contact her with an appointment.
After 8 months, 5 hospital admissions, numerous visits to her gp, several different diagnoses, although no seems to be agreed that it is her ovaries, you can probably understand that we are out of options and that the pain she is experiencing means that there has to be something wrong yet no one seems to want to help her.
She has never had any major gynaecological problems before and her health is generally ok.
