What Causes Stomach Problems?

Hi, my mum has been having stomach problems she is 67 with chronic bad health, but lately she has been unable to eat much food as she says her stomach becomes really heavy and she feels week. It is worse when she is standing and has to lay down all the time. She has lost weight due to not being able to eat much. She doesn t seem to be in any pain but she said the heaviness is really severe.

Hi ! Good afternoon. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, I would have advised her for a routine blood check up like a CBC, ESR, blood sugar, blood urea, serum creatinine, urine routine/microscopic and culture sensitivity test to rule out a silent UTI, and a preliminary ultrasound abdomen to rule out any intra abdominal pathology. Till then I would advise her for a pro biotic, a proton pump inhibitor and a prokinetic agent for a possible symptomatic relief. I would also advise her to add more of roughage and enough liquids in her diet along with a moderate exercise programme depending on her medical fitness. In case no result comes out of the investigations and conservative treatment, I would advise you to consult and show her to a gastro enterologist for a possible endoscopic evaluation of her intestinal tract.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
