What Causes Stoppage In Menstruation & Hot Flashes?

I am on the 6th day of my cycle and my period has just stopped and since yesterday I have been having hot flashes especially in th afternoon and evening, and although I had them in the past i am not sure they're normal for a 32 y.o. who gave birth about 16 months ago. My doctor used to say that many women experience hot flashes after they give birth and until the menopause but I don't know how normal this is. Thanks.
