Hi,
Plavix contains
clopidogrel which belongs to the group of medications known as anticoagulants is used to prevent heart attacks, strokes in patients with
heart disease, recent stroke or blood circulation disease by preventing
blood clots. Some patients who take single or multiple anticoagulant medications may have additional co-morbid medical conditions, if nor they may receive other treatments or medications that can increase the risk of prolonged bleeding after a dental procedure including or previous several heart attacks, liver impairment or alcoholism.
In these situations, dental practitioners may wish to consult with patient's physician to determine whether care can be delivered safely. Any suggested modification to the medication regimen such as stopping anticoagulants like Plavix prior to
dental surgery should be done in consultation with the patient's physician. Most western studies don't recommend interrupting anti-platelet or warfarin or replacing warfarin with heparin before
dental extraction if the international normalized ratio (INR) levels.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
